I don’t know what it is, but sometimes I get into a mood where I want to watch a movie even though it has received terrible reviews and is almost universally acknowledged as crap. That’s what happened tonight, as I rented the 1999 box office bomb Dudley Do-Right starring Brendan Fraser, Alfred Molina, and Sarah Jessica Parker (who, incidentally, I didn’t know was in the film).
I had zero expectations about the movie before sitting down to watch it, which probably helped because I didn’t think it was… unwatchable. Yes, it was bad; but I could at least see what the filmmakers were attempting to do and I could at least sit through it. I will say that you have to be familiar with the cartoon in order to appreciate what’s happening on the screen. Otherwise, you’ll just think the actors are hamming it up or something.
Molina’s Snidely K. Whiplash was the highlight of the movie, for sure. Brendan Fraser, on the other hand, was a terrible Dudley. I thought SJP was all wrong as Nell, too.
While I wouldn’t recommend watching Dudley Do-Right, I don’t think it was as bad as the rating it currently has on IMDB.com! I give it 2 stars out of 5.
