After about a month off, the FOX television show Justice returned with a new episode last night. It was called “Shotgun” and was a bit different from the other episodes I’ve seen this season. To begin with, the focus of this show was squarely on Tom (Kerr Smith) rather than on Ron (Victor Garber) or the team in general. I’m not sure if the writers plan to highlight Tom like this in future episodes, but I hope not. He’s just not as interesting a lead to me as Ron is.
Another thing that was different about last night’s episode was they did away with the theme song for the opening credits. I thought this was a good move because I didn’t think the theme was particularly good anyway. Instead of the theme, they just showed the credits over regular scenes after the teaser.
The plot of last night’s episode was kind of the usual fare for this show. A man was arrested for the murder of his wife, but he claims he didn’t do it. It’s then up to TNT&G to save the guy’s life. Once again, Tom played the part of the conscientious crusader, which is getting to be a bit tiresome in all honesty. I mean, I’m sure there are defense lawyers like him out there, but why would he have agreed to work at a firm like TNT&G in the first place? It just doesn’t compute.
The team won yet again, and rightly so this time as the wife really did commit suicide. For the first time all season, I wasn’t very interested in what was happening on the screen. I’ve been hearing rumors that this show will be canceled, and if last night was any indication, then perhaps it should be. There was some really clunky dialogue (that whole “jurors stand a little taller” when they take the oath spiel comes to mind) and terrible acting. Yikes. Have I been wrong about this show all along?
