So I rented In the Cut without knowing anything about it because Meg Ryan stars in it and I usually like everything she does. Wow, I had no idea what I was in for with this particular film. Other reviewers have referred to it as an erotic thriller, which should give you an inkling as to some of the content. Yes, there were graphic sex scenes.

The thing is, I don’t understand why the movie needed those kinds of scenes. So Meg Ryan’s character Frannie was a sexually liberated woman… how did that have an impact on the story, exactly? I’m trying to think of how the movie benefited from having those scenes, but I can’t come up with anything. Similarly, I’m trying to think of how the movie would have been worse off without those scenes. Again, I can’t come up with a good answer. That leaves me to conclude that while the scenes weren’t exactly gratuitous, they came pretty close.

Also, I just have to comment about Mark Ruffalo’s appearance. He totally reminded me of the guy who played Mr. Kotter in Welcome Back, Kotter, and it was very distracting. Did anyone else get the Kotter vibe?

Anyway, skip this movie. Totally not worth it at all!
