I tried to bottle up my hatred of Tom Cruise long enough to get through M:I3 because I’d heard that this was actually a good film. I managed to sit through the whole thing, and did actually enjoy parts of it. Here’s my take on the movie.
Super agent Ethan Hunt (Cruise) is trying to settle into a somewhat normal life. He’s engaged to a woman who thinks he’s an air traffic controller, and they look like they’re enjoying suburbia. But then he gets another assignment that he can’t turn down. This time, he’s to track down something called the Rabbit’s Foot before Owen Davian (Philip Seymour Hoffman) can get his hands on it. What is the Rabbit’s Foot and what does it do? I don’t know because that’s never explained.
Instead, we get the usual Mission: Impossible style stunts that leave you shaking your head in disbelief. But because I knew going in that I’d be seeing stuff like that, it didn’t bother me as much.
This movie was directed by JJ Abrams (of Alias, Lost, and Felicity TV fame) and often just felt like a big-budget episode of Alias. Overall, though, it’s a fairly decent popcorn movie — as long as you don’t bother asking questions about the plot (as Roger Ebert advises in his review)!!
