When I decided to register my own domains and go with paid hosting for my blogs rather than Blogger/Blogspot, I did a lot of research into the various hosting services out there. In addition, I got a lot of feedback and recommendations from other bloggers who have had their own domains for a long time. There was a lot to choose from, but I eventually decided to go with Dreamhost.
There are three main reasons that I chose Dreamhost. First, someone posted a discount code that reduced my first-year costs from $119 all the way down to $22! This included one free domain registration, plus a sizable bandwidth allowance (I don’t have the exact figure here, but it’s more than enough for my needs).
The second reason I chose Dreamhost is that I can host an unlimited number of domains on the same account. I started with one, and I’m up to three right now. I don’t know if other services do the same thing or not, but this is a pretty convenient feature.
Third, I like Dreamhost because they have an excellent service record. There’s rarely any downtime from what I’ve read, and I haven’t experienced any of this personally. I can always access my sites when I want, and publish my blog posts quickly.
Overall, Dreamhost is a fantastic company to use if you’re thinking about switching from free blog hosting to your own domain. I recommend trying them out, even if it’s just for a year or so.
