I was very excited to finally sit down and watch Inside Man because I’ve heard such good things about this movie. Plus, I’d never seen a Spike Lee movie before (hard to believe, perhaps, but true) and I really like Clive Owen and Jodie Foster — not to mention Denzel Washington, too.
Inside Man starts out at a great pace. Owen plays a man named Dalton Russell who has orchestrated the perfect bank robbery. His plan mainly consists of having his team impersonate a painting crew, then walking into the bank and taking out the security cameras with an infrared light of some sort. Then, the would-be robbers make all the customers and bank employees strip down to their skivvies and don identical jumpsuits and masks. This is important because later no one will be able to say with certainty which are the innocent bystanders and which are the bank robbers.
Denzel Washington plays a cop named Keith Frazier, and he’s the one in command of the police force surrounding the bank. He and his team try to figure out who the bank robbers are and what they really want so the situation can be resolved with no loss of life.
Meanwhile, Jodie Foster plays a woman named Madeleine White, who’s hired by the bank president (played by Christopher Plummer) to make sure that certain incriminating documents don’t see the light of day.
As I said, the movie starts out very well. It’s smart, interesting, and well-paced. But then from the middle onward, it slowed way down and became pretty boring. Once it was clear that Russell and his team weren’t going to try to escape from the bank, I was ready for a stunning payoff. Unfortunately, that never came. Yes, the ending was something of a surprise, but it wasn’t big enough, know what I mean?
I thought Inside Man had a lot of potential, but was disappointed by the result. I give it 6.5 stars out of 10, and really wish there were some reason for me to give more than that.
I just got done watching The Manchurian Candidate starring Denzel Washington, Meryl Streep, and Liev Schrieber. I know it’s a remake of a 1962 movie and is based on a book, but I never saw or read the earlier versions and didn’t know what to expect from this one. I’m going to mention specific details here, so I recommend you stop reading if you haven’t seen the film yet!
