Last night’s CSI episode was called “Redrum,” and it was pretty easy to figure out why the writers chose this title: Keppler and Catherine take a backwards approach to solving their latest case. Let me explain.

The crime involved a high-profile local assemblyman named Daniel Zamesca (played by A Martinez) who was murdered on a secluded desert road. Drugs were found in the Zamesca’s car, as well as a photograph of him (or his brother? I don’t remember) doing drugs. Since Zamesca had been pushing for tougher drug laws, this had the makings of a huge scandal.

After analyzing the evidence, the CSI team believes that a drug kingpin named Thomas Simon pulled the trigger, but Simon is in hiding. This poses a problem because the sheriff’s office wants a quick resolution to the case since it’s in the public eye. That’s when Keppler comes up with his less-than-ethical plan: he and Catherine, along with the help of Brass and a police snitch, will stage another crime scene, “arrest” the snitch, and make it look like the guy will take the fall for Zamesca too.

The rest of the episode shows Keppler and Catherine working together very secretively to stage the new crime scene, breaking the rules, and generally deceiving the rest of the team. Nick in particular gets suspicious and calls a meeting with Warrick, Greg, and Sara to discuss what’s going on. The four of them then work together to show that the evidence against the snitch was falsified, and eventually they do get to the bottom of what’s going on.

Keppler’s plan works, and Simon comes out of hiding a short time later at which point Brass arrests him. But the DA wasn’t informed of the plan from the beginning and says she can’t tell “fact from fiction” in the case, so she refuses to charge Simon. Luckily, the team is able to tie Simon to another murder, so they got their guy in the end.

I have to say that I really like the way Keppler is shaking things up on the show. I can’t imagine mister by-the-book Grissom doing anything like this, and it’s definitely refreshing to see some new things happening here. William Petersen is still in the credits, so I don’t know what’s up with him. Maybe this Liev Schreiber deal is just a test run to see how CSI would fare in the ratings without Petersen in the lineup. I’m all for it!

By the way, Nick looked really pissed off at the end, so I wonder what kind of fallout there will be from Keppler’s stunt. Looks like the team is getting torn apart here. Interesting….

I was able to watch Grey’s Anatomy at its regular time last night (rather than on TiVo), which just reinforced how much I hate commercials. Anyway, let’s just get right into the recap of this latest episode, which was called “Great Expectations.” Remember, I’m going to talk about almost everything that happened, so if you don’t want to know plot details, don’t read any further!

Cristina/Burke: Burke invited Meredith and Derek over for dinner at the beginning of the episode. Of course he and Cristina weren’t speaking to each other, so it was kind of funny to see her sitting there eating cereal because Burke said he only cooked enough for three people.

Cristina and Burke keep up their silent treatment for most of the episode, but then Cristina finally talks to him at the end. She tells him that she doesn’t care if she loses this particular “race” (that was a reference to a patient she dealt with) because she’s in it for the long haul and will see Burke at the finish line.

What do you suppose Burke’s reply to that was? He asked her to marry him!!!! I hadn’t seen any previews or read any spoilers, so I was completely floored by that! No answer from Cristina yet though.

George/Callie: George chose to deal with his father’s death by turning into a “sex machine.” Callie actually ran away from him because she couldn’t take anymore, and she begged Izzie to deal with George instead. Later on in the episode, Izzie and George have a talk in one of the conference rooms, and for some reason Izzie says that she has to let George go. I’m not sure what she meant by that, but it sounds as though they might be ending their friendship? But that makes no sense to me. Why can’t she be George’s friend even if Callie is back in the picture?

George goes to Callie’s hotel room at the end of the ep, and starts telling her about how his dad’s death made him feel. Then he says that he feels better just by looking at Callie and being with Callie, so….. he asks her to marry him!!

I have to say that this proposal coming right on the heels of the Burke/Cristina proposal didn’t have as much punch. In fact, it detracted from the other proposal, in my opinion. As with the other couple, there was no answer in this episode.

Derek/Meredith: Derek spent most of the episode being angry that the chief asked Burke to replace him if he stepped down. Derek even snapped at Meredith because she told Sloan that the chief’s job was basically up for grabs. But they made up by the end of the episode and actually had a normal conversation for once.

Alex/Addison: Addison starts out by avoiding Alex and saying that she’s too busy to talk to him. Finally, he just grabs her and drags her into a linen closet (?) where he tells her that she has to talk to him eventually. He then proceeds to say that she doesn’t need to be embarrassed about the kiss. It happened, so just get over it. Besides, he’s not even interested in her, so what difference does it make? That was a jaw-dropper for me. I certainly wasn’t expecting that kind of speech from Karev!

Richard: The chief finally tenders his official resignation to the board, and can’t believe how good he feels about everything. He then goes to see Adele to tell her the news. Unfortunately, it’s been “months” since her ultimatum to him, and she has already moved on with another man.

Bailey/Izzie: Bailey was on a mission to start a free clinic at Seattle Grace, so she spent most of the episode trying to get the attendings to back her plan. Then, wouldn’t you know it, Izzie offers to donate her $8 million to fund the “Denny Duquette Memorial Clinic.”

Besides all this, there was a patient storyline about two best friends who promised to be with each other from the “cradle to the grave.” But it turns out that one of the girls has cervical cancer and is facing some rough months ahead. She chooses to go back to her Amish community with her mother and father. Her friend won’t be welcome there because she shunned the faith after she was baptized, so the girls must part now. Yes, I cried. The sappy stuff has been getting to me lately.

Overall, I thought this was another uneven episode. I’m glad to see some storylines finally moving forward (Burke/Cristina), but don’t like the way others are playing out (George/Callie). I don’t even know what to expect from this show anymore, but I’m definitely going to be back next week!
