I’ve had a couple of emails from readers asking me to review a service called UseNeXT. I don’t use the service myself, but have several friends who are UseNext memers. In order to prepare for this review, I spent a few days familiarizing myself with the Usenext setup and gathering info from my friends’ experiences. Here’s what I’ve concluded.
First, let me explain what UseNeXT is. It’s a service provider that allows members to gain access to files on Usenet. These files may or may not be copyrighted; both types exist and are available for download. UseNeXT has three different membership levels that grant you either 10GB, 20GB, or 50GB of high-speed downloads per month. There is also a “Free Download” mode that allows you to download an unlimited amount of data — at an annoyingly slow speed.
As I mentioned, I played around with UseNeXT via a friend’s membership. The first thing I checked out was the search function. I wanted to see how easy it would be to find a particular file. I looked for a few popular television shows that I was pretty confident would be available, and they were. It was easy to get to them and easy to identify specific files by the names. However, one thing that threw me for a loop was the fact that a single TV show could be broken up into 20 or more files. But apparently, there’s a Download Wizard that automatically splices the files together so that you get a single .avi or .mpeg when everything’s done.
I downloaded some NON-COPYRIGHTED files to test out UseNeXT’s speed. It was incredibly fast, and in speaking to my friends, I discovered that, on average, it takes them less than 10 minutes to download an entire 1-hour television episode. I’ve heard of people taking hours to do that with other sites, so UseNext does indeed seem to compare favorably in this regard.
I asked my friends about any negative aspects they’ve uncovered in their experience with the software, and one of them told me that sometimes it’s impossible to find a particular file because it gets bundled or grouped with completely different files. For example (and again, this is just hypothetical, files for an episode of, say, Smallville will inexplicably be bundled with files from, say, Battlestar Galactica. But if you search for Smallville, you won’t see the files turn up in the results because they’re with the Battlestar Galactica filegroup. The search will eventually pick out the right files, but it could be days before that happens.
I’ve heard that some UseNeXT members have complained that their computers were infected with adware or spyware from the UseNeXT software, but my friends haven’t had any problems of that sort.
Overall, based on the little bit that I saw firsthand and my friends’ testimonials, I’d say that UseNeXT sounds like a pretty good deal for those who are into this sort of scene.

Thanks for the review.
Usenext is a great tool, but the company has some malpractises I believe everybody should know about.
It is true that you can download a lot of great stuff at very high speeds. The proposeed hybrid account allows you to download 10GB (or more, depending upon the chosen formula) at high speed and unlimited volume at “free download” (read reduced speed). The truth is, they will only allow you to download 10GB, your account will be locked once that volume is reached and there goes the “promise” of the free download.
I just to want to warn everybody about Usenext’s business practises.
that is not what I wanted to read
I’m pretty sure the above is a misunderstanding. The software defaults to the high-speed download setting and once you reach your limit, it stops. But if you go to the settings/miscellaneous and uncheck ‘If a file can’t be downloaded in free mode, use the high speed setting’ or something like that, it started up again, albeit at a very slow speed.
Yes, Katie is correct. According to my friend, you have to manually switch over to the free download mode once your account limits are reached.
I don’t know anything about usenet but I want to download the p90x manual. What is this going to do to my computer? What will it change? Can I delete it after I use it?
Natasha
natasha, you don’t need to use usenext to get the p90x. You can get it from other sources for FREE! I have a whole list of websites that use DDL type files such as [edited] and [edited] Go there first. You can find anything online without paying for it.
Jack dude, those are warez sites. You are not doing her a favor by getting her to download from there. A lot of those “free” apps have spyware in them.
Eh, thanks GTW. Jack’s links slipped by somehow. Yeah, I’d definitely be careful about downloading anything from warez sites.
Not a FREE service – upon downloading the software and setting up for the free trial account if you do not read all the fine print the software defaults to the high speed charge – which in my case worked out to $13 for 30 mb before my ccrd company flagged out a fraud alert. Rather malicious and underhanded way of grabbing money for a ‘FREE trial’
Guys iv been using UseNext for a while and i just want to recommend YOU DO NOT USE THEM.
I have had a very bad experience and now they are trying to charge me for a subscription i did not use. They didnt make it clear that they charge you every month no matter if you pay for it or not, they will also use debt collectors.
You may think you can pay once for say 50GB and then just use that and buy another 50GB but they will keep charging you no matter if you pay for it or not. When you dont pay, they will get dept collectors to recover the money. They didnt contact me to say this is whats going to happen or anything.
Unbelivable.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
Usenext beats DDL sites any day but obviously it comes with a price rather then DDL sites. I personally own/use DDL sites and found that its great. I tried Usenext in the past and it seems quite too pricey for me.
Well, I was wondering what should I use for a fast ddl site, is usenext the way to go?
They may used to have been good but this site seems to think they have some billing issues.
Guys,
Fully agree with review No.15 Leave well alone.
I tried to recharge my 50GB monthly account, during the process I was informed that there was an error, so I repeated the whole process again. Following month find I’m charged twice on my bank statement. UseNeXT, of course cannot find any trace on their records of being over credited even though it’s clear on my paypal and bank statement.
Impossible to get my money back, they don’t pick up calls and stop the thread on emails.
As above – This lot are scam merchants and avoid them at all costs!!!!!!!
