Desperate Housewives 3×15

Desperate Housewives Last night’s episode of Desperate Housewives was called “The Little Things You Do Together,” and though it played out like a season finale, it most certainly wasn’t. There were plenty of questions answered and a major storyline was wrapped up, so let’s get right to the recap. So much happened that I’m just going to use bullet points and give highlights rather than attempt to give a blow-by-blow of the entire episode:

  • Orson didn’t kill Monique, his mother did. It was also Mrs. Hodge’s idea to remove Monique’s teeth so she couldn’t be identified. Orson went along with the cover-up because he felt guilty about his father’s suicide (which, actually, was another of Mrs. Hodge’s murders).
  • Mrs. Hodge tries to kill Bree, making it look like suicide, but Orson intervenes just in time. In the ensuing struggle, Mrs. Hodge has a stroke and is left completely paralyzed and unable to talk.
  • Alma died after falling off the roof of her house in an attempt to escape from the attic where Mrs. Hodge had locked her up. Orson makes it look like Alma was the one who killed Monique in a jealous rage, and also makes it look like his mother had a stroke after finding Alma’s body. In other words, Mike, Orson, and Bree are all free and clear now.
  • The Scavos had the grand opening for the pizza parlor, and despite Lynette’s mistake in ordering chairs, the night is a big success. Tom chokes up during his thank you speech, and it’s clear that he’s very happy about everything (and grateful that Lynette is helping him out).
  • Gabby wakes up in bed next to a half-naked Zach, who tells her that they slept together. Gabby is totally hung over from the night before and can’t remember a thing. Later on, however, Carlos gets a glance at Zach while they’re standing at the urinals in Tom’s restaurant, and he tells Gabby that she would remember if she had sex with Zach. Gabby then freaks out because Zach lied to her and tells him that the whole friendship thing isn’t working. Later, Carlos says that the friendship thing isn’t working for him either, which I hope means that they’ll get back together soon!
  • Ian found out that Mike had an engagement ring on him when he was in that car accident. Obviously the ring was intended for Susan, and that fact kicks Ian into gear. He proposes to her at the Scavo party and she says yes, while a depressed Mike looks on.

My Reaction: I thought this was one of the strongest DH episodes of the entire third season! I am so glad to finally be done with that Monique murder mystery, and while I still think that the writers intended Orson to be a bad guy and then changed their mind mid-stream (the dangling plot threads bear this out, I think), I’m satisfied with the way the situation was resolved.

I am also glad that the stupid Zach/Gabby storyline seems to be over once and for all. That was tiresome (x10). Now I hope we get to focus on Gabby and Carlos, because that’s where the real action is, IMO!

I thought the pizza parlor opening was a bit of a letdown; the writers spent so much time on the set up that the payoff should have been way better. I am interested in seeing how the working relationship changes Tom and Lynette’s relationship, so I’m not giving up on this storyline just yet.

The best lines of the night all belonged to Carlos. I can’t give exact quotes here, but I’m sure you’ll know what I’m talking about: “You bagged another neighborhood kid?” “I’m going to warn the Scavo boys.” “You’d KNOW if you had sex with Zach” (said while patting a huge salami). “Seabiscuit” (throwaway reference to Zach later on).

MORE CARLOS, PLEASE!!!!

Upscale Sailing Apparel

If you’re looking for durable, fashionable, and unique sailing or yachting apparel, then you’ve got to visit a website called PoshYachting.com. I was browsing through their sailing gear a bit earlier and really liked what I saw. Many of the items featured on the site are made from “re-sails,” or recycled sails, which is just about the coolest thing I’ve ever heard! Moreover, I read that the people behind PoshYachting.com design and manufacture their products using the same materials and machinery that actual sails are made with.

PoshYachting.com has a nice selection of jackets, shorts, shirts, and vests, as well as bags and accessories. Plus, there are always discounted items in the Sail Bin, so be sure to click on that category while you’re shopping.

Even though I don’t sail, I’m seriously thinking about ordering this jacket. It looks like it would be perfect in all kinds of weather, and that’s something I need right about now. Check it out!

Free eBooks at ManyBooks.net

I like to keep my HP iPAQ rx1955 fully stocked with eBooks so that I always have something to read when I have to wait in line, wait for appointments, etc. Therefore, I’m constantly on the lookout for good sites that offer free eBook downloads. Of course there’s always Project Gutenberg if I’m in a hurry, but I like to change things up once in awhile, so I frequently browse elsewhere. Over the weekend, I found a new (to me) site called ManyBooks.net that I’d like to review today.

I was looking for a copy of The Rainbow by D.H. Lawrence, and Google listed the ManyBooks site third or fourth in the search results. I’d never heard of the site before, so I decided to check it out.

I was impressed by several things on the ManyBooks.net homepage. First of all, it’s very easy to locate the books you want. You can browse or search by title, author, category, or language, and the results are quick and accurate. Once you select a title to download, you’re given basic information about the book as well as a short excerpt.

A second thing that impressed me about the ManyBooks.net site is the fact that you can specify the kind of file you’d like to download. For example, The Rainbow was available as in PDF, rtf, doc, MobiPocket, eReader, iPod Notes, and several other formats that I wasn’t familiar with. For the purposes of this review, I tried both the PDF and the rtf, and received both of those file types without any problems.

A third thing I liked about ManyBooks.net is the number of books available. There are currently more than 15,000 titles on the site, and I’m sure more are added all the time. That’s an awesome selection that’ll definitely keep me busy for a long while!

Now, I have to mention that I had a couple of issues viewing the files on my PDA, but I can’t be sure if that’s due to my iPAQ or to the files themselves. (In other words, I don’t want to “blame” ManyBooks.net for something that might be my own PDA’s fault.) Here’s what I mean; when I try reading the PDF on my iPAQ, some of the words wrap to the next line in weird places — like just the final two or three letters will wrap, which makes it very difficult to read because I have to try to figure out what the heck the word is.

The rtf file was better in that regard (i.e. there were no odd line breaks), but gave me a different problem instead: there were no spaces between the paragraphs. That wasn’t as big a deal because the file was still readable, but I like to have some white space on the pages to give my eyes a break.

Despite these minor annoyances, I’ll be going back to ManyBooks.net for more eBooks in the future. If you like reading books on your PDA as much as I do, then check out ManyBooks.net!

Cool Video Sharing Site

Video sharing sites are all the rage these days, and I just heard about another very popular one that might be of interest to you. It’s AapkaVideo - Indian (desi) Video Sharing, and is targeted at those who are particularly interested in Indian culture. On Aapka Video, you can view, upload, download, and share user-generated videos as well as bollywood and cricket clips, music videos, and more.

I like Aapka Video’s clean design and the way the site is organized. It’s very easy to navigate through the different categories, and the browse and search features make it possible to locate specific videos quickly. I also like how there are several Most Popular categories that allow users to view the most watched videos of the day, week, month, or all-time. In addition, the Recently Added section allows users a simple, effective way of keeping up with the latest developments on the site.

Overall, Aapka Video looks like a great place for anyone interested in Indian videos. The site is completely free to join, so go check it out right now!
