I just came across this cool widget from Automotive.com that shows me the current gas prices both nationally and locally! I have the widget set to display the averages in Bloomingdale, IL, but you can go to the Automotive.com site and enter your zip code to get your local prices or just get the national average. You can also enter a bunch of different zip codes from your area to get a better idea of where to go for cheap gas prices, so this little widget could actually end up helping you save money.

I read that Automotive.com takes into account federal & state taxes, crude oil costs, refining costs, and distribution & marketing costs to arrive at the prices reflected in the widget. I was just out today, and can tell you that the data is pretty accurate.

Anyway, for now I’m just going to keep the widget in this post, but I’ll also try to get it working in the sidebar. If I can’t do that, then I’m going to create a separate page and keep it there.

Edit: I’ve now added the widget to the sidebar, and that one seems to be working properly as far as grabbing gas prices from any zip code.
