The March 22 episode of Grey’s Anatomy was called My Favorite Mistake, and it mostly dealt with the aftermath of the George/Izzie hookup, as well as the continued competition for next chief. Here’s a closer look at what happened in episode number 3×19.
George/Izzie: George woke up in the morning and didn’t remember anything that happened the night before. All he knew was that there was too much bourbon involved. Izzie, however, remembered everything and she was very freaked out and jumpy about it. She spent most of the episode agonizing over what happened. On the one hand, she knew it was a HUGE mistake. But on the other, it’s clear that she has been falling for George for a while and might even be in love with him.
George eventually remembers that he and Izzie had sex, but he’s not torn about the next step at all. He knows they have to end everything right now, and he makes Izzie promise that the night will be their “secret.” He’s not going to hurt Callie by telling her just to ease his conscience and neither is Izzie.
George/Callie: Meanwhile, George still has to deal with Callie at work. She’s willing to forgive and forget (obviously she doesn’t know about the adultery) because her father (played by Hector Elizondo) is coming to town to meet George. So she wants them to act like the perfect married couple while her father is there. George complies, but then ends up walking out on Mr. Torres when he wants George to sign a post-nup. George doesn’t want Callie’s house and cars; he wants to take care of her in his own way.
Cristina/Burke: Not much of these two last night. Burke has his interview with the hospital board, but we don’t get to see any of it. Cristina struggles with the whole marriage issue. At first, she thinks they can go back to the way they were when they first started dating. She calls it her “Be kind, rewind” plan (hee!), but Burke isn’t having any of that. He wants to go forward only. By the end of the hour, Cristina decided that she loves Burke enough to go through with the wedding, as long as it’s small (only Mer and Der will be invited) and in front of a Justice of the Peace (nothing spiritual).
Meredith/Derek/Addison/Alex/Bailey/Sloan: Not much screen time for these characters either. Alex spent the ep with Jane Doe again and helped her choose a face. Sloan handled the reconstructive surgery with Meredith’s help. Addison was on the receiving end of a sudden confession from Izzie about her “adultery”. Derek tried to protect Meredith against Sloan’s manipulations. Bailey inadvertently gave Sloan an idea about how to impress the hospital board.
My Reaction: I actually liked this episode of Grey’s Anatomy very much. It reminded me of previous seasons in that there was a nice balance between the relationship stuff and the hospital stuff. I enjoyed the pacing of the episode, too: it was very quick, which didn’t leave me any time to get bored.
Last week I was really upset that the writers decided to go down the George/Izzie sex road, but I have to say that I liked the way they handled the aftermath. I think they struck just the right note there: both characters are reacting the way I’d expect them to. I’m still not happy that these two have slept together, but at least it seems like it will be dealt with in a decent way.
Am I the only one who’s not interested in the whole chief thing at all? I couldn’t possibly care less about that stupid storyline.
There was not enough Addison in this episode. I’ve noticed that her role has been getting smaller and smaller in recent weeks, which I guess means that Kate Walsh is busy filming her pilot. Let’s hope it’s a good one!
I have no idea where the Alex/Jane Doe storyline is leading, but I wish the writers would hurry up and get there already. That whole thing is becoming boring too.
The FOP patient: heartbreaking. As I mentioned in a recent post, I know someone who has FOP and I couldn’t help but think of JF as I watched this ep. What a terrible disease
