Fundraising Products

I think every kid has to do some school fundraising projects at some point during their academic career. I remember back when I was a student, I had to go door-to-door hawking candy bars to raise money for my softball team. I hated doing that, and most of the time I just begged my relatives to buy 5 or 10 candy bars each so I could get rid of my case and be done with it.

Fortunately, things are a lot different these days. I have young cousins who are still in high school and when they do fundraising projects for their sports teams, they get to sell cool products that people would actually want to buy. For example, one of my cousins sold custom flip-flops for her cheerleading fundraising project last year. The flip-flops were pritned with the school logo all over them and looked very good. As you can imagine, they were a big hit with all the students and the cheerleading squad ended up raking in big bucks from the whole deal.

Why couldn’t we have had these custom sandals back when I was in school?!

Grey’s Anatomy 3×21

Grey's Anatomy Grey’s Anatomy was finally back with a regular episode last night, one week after airing that unnecessary clip show that many longtime viewers found to be just a waste of time. Episode 3×21 was called “Time After Time”, and focused mostly on George and Izzie’s complicated relationship. Here’s a closer look at what happened.

George/Izzie: Remember how Izzie revealed in a previous season that she had a baby when she was 16, and she gave that baby up for adoption? Well, the child finally made an appearance last night. The adoptive parents brought Hannah to Seattle Grace because she has leukemia and needs a bone marrow transplant. The girl was already matched up with a donor, but something happened and that donor wasn’t available anymore. So Izzie is basically the last chance that they have of quickly finding a match for Hannah.

Izzie wanted to meet Hannah first, but the adoptive parents left that decision up to the girl. She declined, which hurt Izzie much more than she expected it to. Nevertheless, Izzie goes through with the bone marrow donation after finding out that she is indeed a match.

George could see that something was going on with Izzie, even though she didn’t tell any of the other interns about her personal plight. George takes it upon himself to find out, and once he does, he stays with Izzie through the various medical procedures, holding her hand and talking her through it. He does all this despite the fact that he had made a coffee date with his haggard-looking wife, and once again shows Callie that his friends are more important to him.

There was one scene between these two where George helps Izzie get dressed after the bone marrow procedure where it’s made perfectly clear that the romantic issues between these two aren’t resolved yet and aren’t likely to be resolved any time soon.

Cristina/Burke/Marlowe: Marlowe is still prowling through the halls of Seattle Grace, hoping to get Cristina back before he returns to Stanford. He has scheduled a complicated surgical procedure, one that he “wrote the book” on, and has invited Cristina to scrub in with him. Burke also scrubs in, and Marlowe uses that opportunity to put Preston down and make him look bad in front of Cristina.

Meanwhile, Cristina tries her best to act excited about her upcoming marriage (again in an effort to get rid of Marlowe that much quicker). She does her nails, holds Burke’s hand, and generally acts like a girly girl. Of course, as soon as Marlowe leaves, she goes back to being her regular self.

Derek/Meredith: Derek whines to Richard about being “promised” the chief position long ago. That’s why he moved to Seattle, after all. Richard says he never promised anything, and he even goes so far as to ask Derek to reconsider. Being chief is too much of a strain on your personal life (just look at Richard’s divorce), and he doesn’t want to put Meredith through that. Richard promised Ellis that he would look after Meredith, so I guess this is his way of doing so. Derek is pissed about the whole thing, of course. It looks like he would choose his career over Meredith in a heartbeat.

Meredith has several scenes with Susan (her stepmom) in which Susan tries to reach out and form a relationship with Meredith while Mer just pushes her away. Finally, Susan has a frank talk with Meredith and they seem to make progress in terms of realizing exactly what each wants from the other.

Alex/Jane Doe: After Jane Doe’s face reconstruction surgery, the doctors send out photos of her to all the major news outlets. Two people show up saying that this is their daughter, and they give a few medical details that seem to prove their case. Jane Doe is ecstatic to finally have “her people” around her. She’s looking forward to going home with them, where she can rest in bed until her baby is due.

However, after spending a few more hours with Jane Doe, the “mother” realizes that she’s made a horrible mistake. This person isn’t her daughter after all. The would-be parents quickly exit, thus leaving it to Alex to break the news to Jane Doe. She reacts horribly, lashes out at Alex, and tells him to leave her alone.

My Reaction: I thought this episode was totally boring. I have never liked this stupid Jane Doe storyline and can’t believe that this patient has been around for, what, six episodes now?? That’s like a quarter of the season. Where are the writers going with this??? I mean, seriously, are we supposed to care about this patient or something? Sheesh.

I’m not a George/Izzie shipper at all, so their scenes together annoyed me. George continually steps over the line with Izzie, and then wonders why she can’t/won’t back off? Whatever. Callie was looking like crap in this ep… there’s been some speculation that she’s pregnant. I hope not, because GA doesn’t need to go down that road at all.

Mer/Der is still a snoozefest for me. I couldn’t possibly care less about Meredith’s relationship with her stepmother, nor do I care about whether or not Derek would stick with Mereidth at the expense of his career. Yawn — x10.

At this point, I’m just looking forward to seeing the spinoff.

Online Pool Tournaments

Back in my college days, I spent so much time hanging out in bars that I became pretty good at the games you usually find in drinking establishments: pool, darts, and shuffleboard. Since it’s customary for the winner to hold the table or board and for challengers to pay in order to play, I was often able to get an entire evening’s worth of entertainment for my initial $1. Good times!

Now that I’m older, I don’t spend nearly as much time in bars as I used to, which means I don’t get to play my favorite games as much as I want. I really miss pool, and have tried different online pool rooms now and again in an effort to have some fun from home. But all the online versions I’ve tried thus far have been severely lacking in terms of realistic gameplay, so I just gave up after a while.

Well, that might change pretty soon because I just read a press release about a site called Play89.com that’s supposed to have the give users the best virtual pool experience around. Play89.com (which is currently still in beta) features free online 8-ball pool games, as well as pool tournaments where players can test their skills against high-caliber competition. Play89.com is run by LogicEmpire, a company that has a reputation for building quality online gaming sites, so I can’t wait to grab the free software and check out the action for myself!

In the meantime, I’ll post the full press release here so you can see what I’m talking about. Hey, maybe I’ll see you over in the Play89.com pool room sometime soon!

Press Release:

The beta version of the new online pool room Play89 was launched last week. Powered by the online skill gaming giant LogicEmpire, Play89 features online versions of 8-ball pool in fun money mode. The full version of Play89, with online 9-ball and snooker games, is expected to be released soon.

Play89 is the newest edition to the online pool world. Its free downloadable pool software was designed and developed by LogicEmpire in collaboration with billiards experts. The result is realistic pool software that transfers three-dimensional pool physics into virtual pool and creates an authentic playing environment.

Currently, Play89 features 2D version of multiplayer 8-ball pool in addition to daily and monthly pool tournaments. Play89 is available in more than 15 languages including French, German, Italian, Russian and more.

The full version of Play 89, which is expected to go online soon, will include online 9-ball and snooker games. In addition, 3D versions of 8 ball pool, 9 ball pool and snooker will be available as well.
