The latest How I Met Your Mother episode was called “Showdown” and focused mostly on Barney for a change. In fact, Ted and Robin were in the background most of the time, with Barney, Marshall, and Lily getting a chance to step up. Here’s what happened in episode 2×20.
Barney: Barney grew up thinking that Bob Barker from The Price is Right was his father, so it’s always been a dream of his to meet Bob in person. As a result, he becomes a contestant on TPIR and spends most of the episode practicing for his appearance. He memorizes product pricing, tests out different walks for coming down the aisle, practices spinning the wheel, etc.
When Barney’s big day comes, he actually does very well and ends up winning everything with perfect bids. But one thing he can’t do is confront Bob about being his father because he knows it’s not true, yet he wouldn’t have been able to bear hearing the words come out of Bob’s mouth.
Marshall/Lily: The rest of the gang accuse Marshall and Lily of being co-dependant, which the couple denies vehemently. To prove it, Marshall and Lily agree to sleep apart for the two weeks leading up to their wedding. Lily moves in with Robin (temporarily) while Marshall stays with Ted. Of course, at the end of the ep, we discover that Marshall and Lily were meeting up at a hotel room every night, so they couldn’t go even one night being apart.
My Reaction: I liked this episode a lot. It was nice to see Barney portrayed as something other than a complete ass for a change, and I liked how things actually worked out for him. I like the Barney character, but felt that the writers were making him too cartoonish most of this season. It was good to see one of his schemes work out (he actually won big on The Price is Right) instead of blowing up in his face.
Some of the Marshall and Lily stuff was funny, but on the whole was a bit much. I like these two better when their sweetness towards each other isn’t shoved down our throats like it was in this ep. That goodnight tape was dumb, and I’m not sure why they couldn’t go a single night apart when Lily spent the whole summer in San Francisco.
At any rate, I’m looking forward to the wedding episode coming up! Plus, I hope we get to the Ted/Robin breakup soon. After all, this show is about Ted meeting his future wife and we already know that’s not Robin, so let’s get on with it!
