Last night was the season finale of Grey’s Anatomy. The ep was called “Didn’t We Almost Have it All?” and was the most depressing 53 minutes of television that I’ve ever seen. What happened to the fun GA of Season 2?? Sigh. Anyway, here’s a closer look at the events of episode 3×25. (Spoilers throughout, so don’t read if you don’t want to know!)
Cristina/Burke: Cristina continued to freak out as the wedding drew nearer. She maintained her negative “do I really have to do this” attitude throughout, and it was just clear to everyone that she wasn’t into it. Burke, on the other hand, was intent on plodding straight ahead regardless of Cristina’s wishes.
When it comes time for the moment of truth, Cristina freezes. She can’t force herself to walk down the aisle, and needs Meredith to give her a big speech to get her motivated. Just as they’re ready to start moving, Burke comes out to see what’s going on. He then proceeds to tell Cristina that the marriage won’t work because he’s forcing her to do something that she’s obviously not ready to do. So he walks out on her and the wedding is OFF!
Meredith/Derek: I just couldn’t keep up with their dysfunction throughout this episode. I think Derek was saying that he wanted to be with Meredith (he pulled the whole “love of my life” routine again) but wasn’t sure that she wanted to be with him, blah, blah, blah. Then she said that things have been rough lately and that she’ll get it together soon, etc. I tuned out most of their melodrama. Anyway, I think the gist of it was that he asked her to cut him loose, but she didn’t do it directly. That speech she gave at the end about it being “so over” might have been about Derek, but who knows.
Alex/Rebecca Pope: Rebecca’s husband comes to find her and wants to take her back. But apparently she’s got another man on her mind. She corners Alex and says, “Give me a reason to stay.” Of course, Alex being Alex, he tells her to go with her husband.
Then later at the church, Addison tells Alex he’s making a big mistake by letting Crush Face go. He thinks about it for a minute, then takes off for Seattle Grace. By the time he gets back, Rebecca has checked out. (Thank God.)
George/Izzie/Callie: Izzie is still being wishy-washy about George. I mean, one minute she’s saying that as his best friend, she’s willing to support him in order to help make his marriage work. Then in the very next breath she’s saying ooooh, I’m in love with you. Do you love me too?? *Vomit*.
Callie tells George that she wants to have a baby, and he agrees to try (for some unknown reason). Later, Callie can’t help but rub that fact in Izzie’s face. And somehow, Callie was chosen as the next chief resident. That makes ZERO sense to me, but there you have it.
Oh, and one more thing: George found out that he failed his intern exam, so he was faced with the choice of quitting or repeating his internship from the beginning. He decides to quit!
Richard/Adele: Adele had a miscarriage, but will survive the ordeal. She revealed that it was actually Richard’s baby, and that it would have been a boy. Now it looks like these two will be getting back together.
We also saw Richard talking to the major contenders for the Chief of Surgery position. He decided to offer the job to Derek, but Derek turned it down and said Richard was still the best choice.
Addison/Mark: Not much of these two at all. Addison was basically told to get a life and Mark was just on screen for about 5 seconds.
My Reaction: As I said above, this episode was all about the misery. Did every single character have to have their hopes and dreams smashed at the same exact time? This was far too depressing to be enjoyable on any level. I really don’t like the general direction that Grey’s Anatomy took this year, but after reading creator Shonda Rhimes’s perpective on the entire season, things made a bit more sense. Let’s just say I’m willing to tune in next fall — at least for a couple episodes. I hope it’s worth my time!
