Top Movies for 6/3/07

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End held onto the top spot at the box office, despite a huge 62.4 percent decrease in earnings. Johnny Depp, Keira Knightley, Orlando Bloom, Geoffrey Rush, and the rest of the gang still commanded $43.2 million in ticket sales, putting the third installment of the Pirates franchise well ahead of the competition.

Second place went to a movie that I want to see, a romantic comedy called Knocked Up. This film stars Katherine Heigl from Grey’s Anatomy and made $29.3 million over the weekend, which was a better-than-expected showing.

Shrek the Third earned $26.7 million for third place, and Kevin Costner’s new movie Mr. Brooks (which I also want to see) earned $10 million to debut in the No. 4 spot.

Here’s the complete top-10 for the weekend ending 6/3/07.

  1. PoTC: At World’s End, $43.2 million
  2. Knocked Up, $29.3 million
  3. Shrek the Third, $26.7 million
  4. Mr. Brooks, $10 million
  5. Spider-Man 3, $7.5 million
  6. Waitress, $2 million
  7. Gracie, $1.4 million
  8. Bug, $1.22 million
  9. 28 Weeks Later, $1.2 million
  10. Disturbia, $1.1 million

Distance Degrees

I have several friends who didn’t have a chance to go to college immediately after high school. Instead, they had to work in order to make ends meet, and the more time they spent out of school, the harder it seemed to go back. Then they got married, had kids, and the next thing they know, they’re in their thirties and still don’t have a Bachelor’s degree.

I’ve always stressed the importance of education, so whenever I talk to these women, I try to convince them that it’s not too late to go back to school. In fact, it’s probably easier to earn a college degree now than it was 10 years ago because there are so many more options for students. For example, if my friends enroll in an online university instead of attending classes on campus, they’ll be able to work on their degrees in their spare time. That means no commuting back and forth to school in rush-hour traffic, no babysitters, and no hassles.

It also means no more excuses for putting off college, so I hope my friends take my advice to heart and enroll in an accredited distance learning program like those offered by Capella University. It’ll be one of the best things they can do for themselves and for their families.

“Fifth-Grader” = Ratings Champ?

Jeff Foxworthy Are You Smarter Than a Fifth-Grader I watched the first episode of the FOX game show Are You Smarter Than A Fifth-Grader back in late February of this year because I thought the premise sounded pretty interesting. In case you haven’t seen the show, it works like this: adult contestants are asked questions from fifth-grade textbooks. If they get the questions right, they win money. If they get ‘em wrong, they look like idiots in front of a national TV audience. In addition, they can get help from a panel of fifth-graders at certain points along the way to advance their cause.

I thought the show was completely boring, and in all honesty, it felt very staged. I had a hard time believing that the kids knew the answers all the time. It really looked like they had been fed the answers beforehand. I mean, one of the fifth-graders was able to do a measurement conversion from teaspoons to tablespoons or something like that! Do you know any fifth-graders who could do that without looking it up on a chart??

Besides the fact that Are You Smarter Than a Fifth-Grader comes off as staged, I thought the pace was far too slow for a game show. It took forever for host Jeff Foxworthy to proceed from one question to the next, and his jokes in between questions weren’t funny at all.

Anyway, I was just looking through Zap2It.com earlier today and saw that Are You Smarter Than a Fifth-Grader is still going strong. In fact, it was the ratings winner in its time slot on Thursday, May 31, beating out Pirate Master, repeats of My Name is Earl and 30 Rock, and the National Spelling Bee.

Interesting. Maybe I’ll have to give this show another try before making a final judgment on it!
