The battle for the top spot at the weekend box office went to the new Russell Crowe-Christian Bale western called 3:10 to Yuma. This film was generally well received by critics, earning an 83% freshness rating on RottenTomatoes.com as well as four stars from Roger Ebert. This translated to solid $14.1 million opening weekend.
Rob Zombie’s Halloween came in second place after opening big last weekend. The updated horror flick took in $10 million, while the teen comedy Superbad earned another $8 million in its steady trek towards the $100 million plateau.
