“Ugly Betty” Update

justin.jpg It’s been a long time since I’ve posted an Ugly Betty update. If you recall, I’m currently working my way through Season 1 (on DVD now, since I had to return my friend’s DVR before the fall TV season started). My progress with UB has been pretty slow. The show started off with a bang, and I was immediately drawn in by the well written characters and the strong performances by America Ferrera and Vanessa Williams.

But since then, I’ve kind of gotten off track. Two of the major story arcs (the whole Alex/Alexis thing and Daniel/Sofia hookup) were incredibly boring to me, which made it hard to keep going back to the DVDs, especially when I have so many other shows to watch.

I’m currently stalled on episode 1×16, which was called “Derailed.” This was the one where Betty deliberately tried to ditch Henry’s out-of-town girlfriend. Again, I didn’t like the main storylines in the ep, but did like the scene of Justin singing numbers from “Hairspray” on the subway. It was about time Santos realized Justin will probably never play with RC helicopters or footballs, but that he’s still a great kid. Hopefully we can see more father-son bonding without Santos trying to make Justin into something he’s not.

Anyway, I’m going to stick with Ugly Betty for now because I’ve heard too many good things about it to give up when I’m already two-thirds of the way through the season. I do hope more interesting storylines are on the horizon, though.

Fox and MGM “DVDs for the Cure” Campaign

I received a press release from M80 about the following promotion a few days ago, and thought it was definitely worth posting about here. As many of you know, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which means that some socially conscious companies out there go out of their way to promote special products or make donations to cancer-related charities.

This year, Fox and MGM are getting in on the action by running a promotion called “DVDs for the Cure.” As part of the promotion, the studios are re-releasing several popular titles in special pink packaging, and will donate 50 cents from each DVD sold to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure organization. Moreover, Fox and MGM have pledged a minimum donation of $250,000, so the Susan G. Komen organization will benefit significantly no matter what.

Some of the titles available in the pink packaging include, Legally Blonde, Thelma & Louise, Say Anything, In Her Shoes, There’s Something About Mary, Moulin Rouge, and a bunch more.

Check out dvdsforthecure.com today to support this very worthy cause. I’m going to be purchasing Legally Blonde and Thelma & Louise (two of my favorite movies), and I hope you get involved too!
