I started watching old episodes of Bones on DVD back at the beginning of October. I liked the show so much that I ended up watching at least one ep per day, and sometimes even more. Right now, I’m almost done with Season Two! I have only two or three eps left on DVD, and then I’ll have to catch up with Season Three via a friend’s DVR. With the writers’ strike going on, there likely won’t be any new eps for a while, so I should be all caught up within a couple weeks or so.
Anyway, here are some random thoughts from Season Two:
– Booth and Bones remind me of a lighthearted version of Mulder and Scully. They actually have tons of onscreen chemistry, so they’re a lot of fun to watch. I’m not saying that I’d want these characters to ever get together (remember how that kind of pairing ruined shows like Moonlighting in the past?), but for now the flirting and the tension is great!
– I find that the cases are becoming increasingly hard to believe, at least in terms of why Bones would find herself working on them. At the beginning of the series, she was called in to work on old skeletal remains that were found, making the show a bit like Cold Case in that the original crime took place years ago. But now it seems like the gang is getting a lot of “fresh” skeletons and bodies, ones that are just days or weeks old and still have flesh on them. These hardly seem like instances where a museum anthropologist would have to be called in!
– How great was the episode where Hodgins and Bones were trapped in her car and buried underground? There were a lot of truly emotional scenes in that ep, and it definitely stands out as one of my favorites of the entire series. I especially liked how Booth started digging up the car with his hands and pulled Bones out of the wreck without needing any equipment at all. At first I thought we’d see some plasma cutting action or something like that, but no — he was determined to get her out on his own!
– Angela and Hodgins are a cute couple, and I would love it if the writers allowed them to get married and just be happy in their coupledom. I’m not sure if this will happen because I saw the ep where Angela turns down Jack’s marriage proposal, but it would be sweet if they stay together somehow, some way.
– I don’t like Zack as much as I did in Season One. Now that he’s a full-fledged PhD and got a respectable haircut and all, he’s just not as cute or fun as he used to be. He still comes up with some fantastic one-liners every once in a while, but he’s not the same character that he used to be. (And that’s not a good thing.)
– I have mixed feelings about Cam. First, I didn’t like her because I didn’t think a new character (especially one that was going to have so much screen time every ep) was necessary, and thought she totally disrupted the excellent dynamic that the group had going on. But now that she has backed off a little bit and isn’t so intent on proving her superiority at every turn, she’s a lot more tolerable. I’m not saying that I actually like her now, but at least I don’t feel the need to hit the Skip button when her scenes come on.
Well, that’s all I can think of right now. Bones has definitely become one of my favorite current TV series, so of course I’m going to keep watching!!
