I stopped watching Lost after the Season 3 premier because I was sick of how nothing substantial ever seemed to happen in any of the episodes. This show seriously must set some kind of record for the slowest reveals ever.
But after hearing how awesome the finale was, I decided to catch up over the summer, and was soon back on board. And, with absolutely nothing else going on right now thanks to the ongoing WGA strike, it was a no-brainer that I’d tune in for last night’s Season 4 premier, called “The Beginning of the End”.
Unfortunately, Lost is not the kind of show that lends itself to recaps, since not much ever happens on it! If we take out all the flash-forwards from last night’s ep, very little happened in real time on the island. So instead of giving my usual recap, I’ll just write out a couple of thoughts I had about the show.
– Wow, I can’t believe Jack actually pulled the trigger when he had that gun pointing in Locke’s face. I don’t like either of those characters, so I wouldn’t have minded if there had been a bullet in there.
– The island is now officially divided into two camps: those with Jack, who thinks the rescuers are legit, and those with Locke, who thinks the rescuers are dangerous.
– Harold Perrineau was listed in the opening credits, but I didn’t catch a glimpse of Michael at all. Did I miss him? Is he always listed in the credits??
– Charlie doesn’t look half-bad when he’s all cleaned up!
– This is pure speculation, but from the flash-forward, I get the feeling that only six people made it off the island (Hurley was screaming about the “Oceanic 6″), and that those six made a pact to lie about the rest of the survivors. That sure is what it sounded like from Jack and Hurley’s conversation in the gym, and if that’s the case, then I’m definitely interested in knowing what the hell happened before the six got out.
– Jack, Hurley, and Kate made it out for sure. I wonder who the other three are?
– The flash-forwards in this ep occurred before the flash-forwards in last year’s season finale. Here we see Jack taking a little vodka with his morning OJ, but he still seems to be pretty functional. Also, last night he got really pissed when Hugo started talking about how they have to go back to the island, but that’s the exact same thing he was screaming to Kate in the Season 3 finale — so the time difference is obvious there.
– I loved how Sawyer went with Locke even though it meant leaving Kate behind.
As I said, not much happened last night, but I enjoyed the show. It’s just nice to see some scripted television every once in a while, ya know?
