In a year when movies can’t seem to hold on to the top spot for more than one week, we’ve got yet another brand-new box office champion. This time, it’s the 3-D film Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert, which pulled preteen girls (and their parents) to the tune of $29 million. That number gave the film the distinction of having the best debut ever for a Super Bowl weekend, and proves that Miley Cyrus is indeed a top draw, whether on television, in concert, or at the movies.
The Eye, a new horror film starring Jessica Alba, finished a distant second with $13 million in ticket sales.
Meanwhile, last week’s box office champ Meet the Spartans slipped all the way down to fifth place with a meager $7.1 million in earnings.
Here’s the complete top 10 — and you’ll notice that Eva Longoria’s new comedy Over Her Dead Body is nowhere to be found. It finished in 11th place with a disappointing $4.6 million take.
- Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert, $29 milllion
- The Eye, $13 million
- 27 Dresses, $8.4 million
- Juno, $7.5 million
- Meet the Spartans, $7.1 million
- Rambo, $7 million
- The Bucket List, $6.9 million
- Untraceable, $5.4 million
- Cloverfield, $4.9 million
- There Will Be Blood, $4.8 million
I thought the 2003 comedy Daddy Day Care starring Eddie Murphy, Jeff Garlin, and Steve Zahn was a pretty entertaining way to spend 90 minutes. While the script itself wasn’t anything too terribly original, the project was helped out by a strong cast that, in addition to the leads, included recognizable names like Regina King, Lisa Edelstein, Lacey Chabert, Kevin Nealon, and Anjelica Huston. As a result, that film went on to gross over $100 million domestically (on a $60 million budget).
