New Adventures of Old Christine

The New Adventures of Old Christine Julia Louis-Dreyfus I totally forgot that Season 3 of The New Adventures of Old Christine started up again two weeks ago. Fortunately, a friend of mine also watches the show, so she recorded them for me.

I was able to watch eps 3×01 (called “The Big Bang”) and 3×02 (called “Beauty is Only Spanx Deep”) earlier today, and have to say that I was disappointed with how uneven the writing was. The season premier was totally boring and barely elicited a chuckle, while the second ep was only a little bit better. If things continue like this, I can’t imagine the show being picked up for a fourth season.

Here are some random thoughts from the eps.

3×01 - The Big Bang:

– I like Christine and Daniel as a couple, but really can’t imagine these two working as a real-life pair. Christine is sooo neurotic and wishy-washy, while Daniel is completely grounded and normal. Total opposites, for sure.

– Matthew continues to be one of the most useless characters I have ever seen on a television show of any kind. He’s not funny, he doesn’t do anything, and he just bugs me whenever he’s on the screen. Why is he still around?

– I’m still trying to figure out what goes on at Christine’s health club. I know that it’s a 30-minute workout place where people move from station to station after a set time, but I don’t see how that would help get anyone into shape. I saw an exercise bike, a couple of weight machines, and a few dumbbells, but she didn’t have a treadmill, Stairmaster, or elliptical trainer anywhere in the room.

– I so did not need to hear about Christine and Barb experimenting in college!

– I kind of like the fact that little Ritchie is portrayed as a normal kid rather than a total brainiac. I can’t stand the way most television shows go out of their way to make the kids as precocious as possible.

3×02 - “Beauty is Only Spanx Deep”:

– I had to look up the word Spanx because I’d never heard it before. Now I know it’s a line of body shapers and other “slimming” undergarments.

– I had a hard time believing that Christine would consider plastic surgery because there’s no way in hell she’s a 5. Seriously, if JLD is a 5, then I don’t even wanna know what that makes me!

– That picture of what Christine would look like after surgery was grotesque. She didn’t really think it was beautiful, did she?

– I’m so glad to see new Christine back. After all, that’s one of the main points of the show, isn’t it? (Old vs. new Christine).

– Christine Kimball-Campbell made me laugh out loud.

– I was surprised to see the Sad Dad character return. I thought that storyline from Season 1 was actually pretty funny, so I wouldn’t mind seeing him pop up every now and again.

Well, there’s another new ep scheduled to air again tomorrow night, but I’m not sure if I want to put up another Christine post that soon. Maybe I’ll just post about this show after every two or three eps. We’ll see!

Top Movies for 2/17/08

jumperpromo.jpg As expected, the romantic comedy Fool’s Gold was unable to hold onto its position as the No.1 movie in America for two consecutive weeks. Instead, that honor goes to the new sci-fi thriller Jumper, which stars Hayden Christensen, Samuel L. Jackson, and Diane Lane. The much-anticipated (but heavily panned) film made $27.2 million in its first weekend in wide release.

Second place went to the Jon Chu dance drama Step Up 2 the Streets. This sequel to the 2006 film Step Up sold a very respectable $19.7 million worth of tickets.

In third place was The Spiderwick Chronicles, a fantasy/adventure piece starring Freddie Highmore, Mary-Louise Parker, and Nick Nolte. This is the only film in the current top 10 that I actually want to see, and it racked up $19.1 million at the box office.

Here’s the rest of the week’s Top 10:

  1. Jumper, $27.2 million
  2. Step Up 2 the Streets, $19.7 million
  3. The Spiderwick Chronicles, $19.1 million
  4. Fool’s Gold, $13.1 million
  5. Definitely, Maybe, $9.69 million
  6. Welcome Home, Roscoe Jenkins, $8.88 million
  7. Juno, $4.62 million
  8. The Bucket List, $4.11 million
  9. Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour, $3.29 million
  10. 27 Dresses, $3.17 million
