The newest Pixar animated film WALL-E earned $62.5 million at the box office over the weekend en route to becoming the No. 1 movie in America. This latest Pixar effort continues the studio’s astounding success: all nine of their films have done well with critics and moviegoers alike.
Wanted, an action flick starring Angelina Jolie and James McAvoy as super assassins, performed remarkably well in its own right, earning a whopping $51.1 million. This far surpassed initial industry estimates of a $30 million take.
Last week’s box office champ, Get Smart, did $20 million worth of business to take the No. 3 spot, while Kung Fu Panda continued drawing in audiences to the tune of $11.7 million in ticket sales, pushing its overall total to $179 million.
Here’s the complete Top 10 for the weekend ending 6/29/08:
- WALL-E, $62.5 million
- Wanted, $51.1 million
- Get Smart, $20 million
- Kung Fu Panda, $11.7 million
- The Incredible Hulk, $9.23 million
- The Love Guru, $5.44 million
- Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, $5.03 million
- The Happening, $3.85 million
- Sex and the City, $3.77 million
- You Don’t Mess with the Zohan, $3.2 million
I’m really not surprised to see WALL-E heading up that list. People are insanely excited about it; I think I’ll wait until DVD.
Saw Wall E was very good… a little different than the norm for Pixar but great.
Wanted.. well I love action movies and I had a lot of fun at that one… you have to suspend disbelief but a fun violent movie.
Also saw Indiana Jones… did you see that? It was absolutely horrible… cheezy.. bad plot… bat dialog.. I was actually angry when I left.
I’d love to hear how anyone thought Kung Fu Panda was for kids. Haven’t seen any of the rest Get Smart and Hulk soon though.

I just saw Wanted, and thought it was ok. Not really my kind of thing, but it was hubby’s turn to decide.
Was extremely disappointed with Indiana Jones, thought Hulk was much better than the 2003 version (but not as good as Iron Man).
Kung Fu Panda — my boy is 5, and liked the action scenes, but was kind of bored with the main plot about the panda being the “chosen one” (I don’t think he really understood what was going on). Maybe if your kids are older they’ll like it!
