Since the TV scene is pretty slow in the summer (unless you’re a reality show fan, which I’m NOT), I’m currently trying to go through a bunch of DVDs that I’ve either borrowed from friends or purchased on my own a long time ago but haven’t gotten to yet. Here’s a quick rundown of where I stand with each series.
Ghost Whisperer: I’ve completely stalled out on this show after 11 eps of Season 1. I started watching it because I’d heard some decent buzz from fans, and I actually liked a few of the early episodes. But the storylines have already gotten way too repetitive after just 11 eps, so I have no desire to finish out the season. Who knew that seeing dead people could be so boring?
I’m torn, though, because I love Camryn Manheim and want to see how she does when she joins the cast in S2. Maybe I’ll just ditch the rest of S1 and go straight to S2….
Boston Legal: This show is often a bit too quirky for my tastes, but I’m such a fan of James Spader and Candice Bergen that I can’t give it up. I’m only through the first three episodes of S3, and am underwhelmed thus far. At least Alan Shore is always a featured character, so I have something to look forward in each episode. Otherwise, I would have ditched this show long ago.
My Name Is Earl: I thought this sitcom started off with a bang, but the middle episodes of Season 1 have been a drag. I’m currently on ep 1×18, and things are starting to pick up again (thankfully), so I’m not worried about making it through the rest of the season.
I just wonder if S2 continues in exactly the same vein, or if the writers and producers will shake things up a bit. For example, why not have Earl and Randy move out of the hotel and into a house? While Earl might not be an ideal candidate for a loan, I’m sure mortgage lenders would at least consider him since he does have $100,000 in cash. Heck, he even if he moved into the trailer park next to Joy and Darnell, that would make more sense than throwing money away on a motel room.
Also, I hope that there will be a few more recurring characters in subsequent seasons. I’m getting tired of Randy and the maid (I don’t even remember her name), though Joy and Darnell are always good for a few laughs. It’s hard to imagine the writers sustaining momentum with just these five people, though….
The X-Files: I bought the Ultimate Collection a few months ago, but have barely watched anything from it yet! I’m trying to get through the extra features first, but even that’s proving to be a difficult task because there are just so many of them! At least I have liked the few bonus features I’ve seen, so I have high hopes of what the rest of the discs contain.
