Estelle Getty, an actress best known for her role as Sophia Petrillo on The Golden Girls, died at about 5:30am local time at her Hollywood Boulevard home. She was 84 years old (just 3 days shy of her 85th birthday), and had been suffering from something called Lewy body dementia — though the exact cause of her death hasn’t been reported. Could have just been natural causes, I guess, since she was nearly 85 years old.
Anyway, I loved The Golden Girls, which was on back when I was in junior high/high school. I didn’t watch the entire run of the show, but saw four or five years worth of episodes. Plus, I bought the Season 1 and Season 2 DVDs last summer, and am still going through those whenever I get a chance.
Sophia was my favorite character on the show by far. Whether she was making fun of Rose’s idiotic statements, Blanche’s loose ways with men, or daughter Dorothy’s funny shirts with huge collars, her comments were the ones that most often cracked me up and kept me laughing throughout each episode.
In fact, I think I’ll go pop in a Golden Girls DVD right now, as I suddenly have a desire to see Estelle in action again!
Now that I’m working out at the gym three times per week, I need a steady stream of new audiobooks on my iPod to keep me entertained during each two-hour session. Of course, there’s no way I could afford to purchase all of the audiobooks I go through, so I pretty much settle for what my local library has on its shelves — which is how I discovered the Hannah Swensen mystery series from Joanne Fluke.
