The Dark Knight has maintained its standing as the top movie in the country for a third consecutive week, this time pulling in $43.8 million at the box office. The film’s 17-day domestic total now stands at a whopping $394.9 million, and is poised to continue breaking revenue records as it opens in new markets around the world.
Second place went to the new Brendan Fraser action flick The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, which actually missed the No. 1 spot by just $1.3 million. The third installment of The Mummy franchise opened with a $42.5 million weekend, which was slightly lower than the $45 million studio experts were hoping for.
Last weekend’s No. 2, Step Brothers, slipped a notch to No. 3 with $16.3 million in ticket sales, while Mama Mia! has shown surprising staying power by hanging on to the No. 4 spot with a $13.4 million weekend. That film has now earned a domestic total of $88 million since opening on July 20.
