It was another slow weekend at the box office, where the new No. 1 movie in America, Bangkok Dangerous, needed a paltry $7.8 million to topple Tropic Thunder, the former champion of the past two weeks. Bangkok Dangerous, an action flick starring Nicolas Cage as a hitman, cost an estimated $40 million to make, so I’m sure studio execs are disappointed with the figures for opening weekend.
Tropic Thunder slipped to second place on earnings of $7.5 million, while The House Bunny delivered a solid $5.9 million.
The Vin Diesel sci-fi action film Babylon A.D. plummeted to No. 6 with earnings of just $4 million.
No other new releases opened this week — perhaps because Hollywood wasn’t eager to compete with the first day of NFL action.
Anyway, here’s the complete Top 10 at the box office for the weekend ending 9/7/08:
- Bangkok Dangerous, $7.8 million
- Tropic Thunder, $7.5 million
- The House Bunny, $5.9 million
- The Dark Knight, $5.71 million
- Traitor, $4.66 million
- Babylon A.D., $4 million
- Death Race, $3.59 million
- Disaster Movie, $3.3 million
- Mama Mia!, $2.71 million
- Pineapple Express, $2.4 million
I think Nicola Cage should go back to movies directed by Spike Jonze
