After being preempted last week because of the VP candidates’ debate, Grey’s Anatomy was back with a new episode last night. It was called “Here Comes the Flood”, and was set against the backdrop of a major plumbing problem at Seattle Grace. Surprisingly enough, I actually enjoyed this ep, mostly because it contained flashes of the fun that characterized seasons 1 and 2. I’m just hoping and praying that the writers continue to move in this direction!
Meredith/Derek: Derek hasn’t been moved in to the Grey house for very long, but he’s already in Izzie’s room with a tape measure, envisioning it as his office. Yes, he expects Meredith to kick Izzie and Alex out — something that they hadn’t discussed before.
This leads to an episode-long debate, with Derek trying to bribe Cristina (with the promise of a surgery) to take his side, Izzie coming to the realization that she has no one else if Mer kicks her out, and Alex revealing that he has no money and would be homeless if Derek gets his way. In the end, Meredith stands her ground and says Izzie and Alex are her people, and they’re not going anywhere. Derek agrees for now, but wants to revisit the issue in the future.
Izzie/Alex: When Izzie thought they were going to get kicked out, she found a great apartment across from the hospital. Since she couldn’t afford it by herself, she asks Alex if he wants to move in with her. His response is that he would rather live in his car. Later on while talking to a patient, however, Alex made it obvious that he still has strong feelings for Izzie, and is holding out hope that they might have a future together.
George/Lexie/Sloan: George is finally ready to take the intern exam for the second time, but just as he’s about to do so, all the flooding stuff starts up. So he spends all day running around for the Chief — and then inexplicably sits for the exam at the very end of the long day, with the Chief as his proctor. Wouldn’t it have been better to get some sleep and try again in the morning? I guess not.
Lexie, as usual, was fawning all over George trying to show her support. Mark again called her out on her b.s., especially when she turned down a chance to scrub in on a rare surgery just so she could follow George around. It seems that the writers are setting us up for the possibility of a Lexie/Sloan pairing, which I think would be wrong. I enjoy the way the two characters interact in the workplace, but don’t think they’re right as a couple. She’s far too young for him!
My Reaction: As I said, I liked this episode and have really noticed a change in tone in Grey’s this season. The fun is back, and that’s something that has sorely been missing for several years now. That pain tolerance scene in the cafeteria was great! Those are the kind of interactions that I’m looking for from the main characters. It doesn’t always have to be gloom and doom in the halls of Seattle Grace, does it?
I don’t get why Alex is being such a major asswipe to Izzie, especially since he likes her. I mean, I get that he was disgusted when he learned she was sleeping with George, but it’s not as though his track record in that department is any better. How immature is this guy anyway? I thought acting like you hate a girl even though you really like her is something 12-year-olds do.
I have no words to describe my hate of Derek. It takes some kind of nerve to waltz in and start measuring Izzie’s room like that. What Meredith sees in him, I’ll never understand.
Anyway, good ep. I would love to be able to look forward to Grey’s again every week. Please keep bringing the fun back!
