X-Men Origins: Wolverine dominated the box office this weekend. Starring Hugh Jackman, the comic book film debuted with an impressive $87 million gross — which ought to show that “Internet leaks” do little to deter people from going to see the movies they want to see. I just can’t stand how Hollywood makes crappy movie after crappy movie, and then turns around to blame film piracy (check that link — the MPAA says film piracy is “no different from stealing someone’s shoes.” What a weird comparison to make!) for lost profits. Anyway, good for Hugh, as he seems like a genuinely nice guy in an industry full of… not so nice guys.
Second place went to the Matthew McConaughey-Jennifer Garner romantic comedy Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, which earned a somewhat disappointing $15.3 million. I like Jennifer Garner a lot, so I think I might see this one despite McConaughey’s presence. Speaking of Garner, when was Ghosts filmed? She looks pretty svelte in the promotional stills and trailers, which either means the whole thing was filmed before her second pregnancy or else she has access to a great weight loss supplement. It’s six years down the road for me, and I’m still trying to get back in shape from my pregnancy!
No other new releases made it onto the list this week, so here’s the complete top 10 at the box office for the weekend ending 5/3/09:
