My stepfather is a huge Star Trek fan. While he stops short of dressing up as his favorite characters and attending conventions, he has seen every episode of every Star Trek television show, and he has also watched all of the films. But surprisingly enough, he doesn’t have any of the DVDs! I guess he just doesn’t like to spend money on this type of thing.
With Father’s Day coming up tomorrow, I think I just found the perfect gift for Jim: the Star Trek Original Motion Picture Collection. This is a Blu-Ray box set that contains all six Star Trek films that were released before the series “rebooted” this year. The set features original series stars William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy as Kirk and Spock, and comes with the following films: The Motion Picture, The Wrath of Khan, The Search for Spock, The Voyage Home, The Final Frontier, and The Undiscovered Country.
In addition to the movies themselves, this collection also comes with lots of cool bonus features, such as a behind-the-scenes documentary; audio commentary from various stars, writers, and directors; deleted scenes; cast interviews; photo galleries; theatrical trailers; and numerous featurettes. In short, this is the definitive Star Trek film collection and is a must-have for any true Trekkie!
Ordinarily, this Star Trek Original Motion Picture Collection retails for close to $140, but it’s on sale at Buy.com for $69.49 right now. That’s an awesome price for all of these films on Blu-Ray, so I’m definitely going to have to order the set. It obviously won’t get here before Father’s Day, but I know Jim won’t mind if his gift is a couple days late. He’ll be too thrilled with the movies to notice anything else!
Plot summary (with possible spoilers): Based on a true story, Defiance opens in Eastern Europe in 1941, in the midst of World War II. Hitler’s Nazis are in the process of rounding up and slaughtering Jews. Among the casualties are the parents of Tuvia (played by Daniel Craig), Zus (Liev Schreiber), and Asael (Jamie Bell) Bielski. The Bielski brothers manage to survive, fleeing into a nearby forest to escape from the continued persecution.
Episode 1×02 of Nurse Jackie was called “Sweet ‘n All”, and served to give some more background information about the main characters in the series. Nothing from this episode really stood out as spectacular, but I’m still going to stick with the show. I know it often takes a while for a series to hit its stride, and I’m hoping that will eventually happen here.
What’s with all of these
Private Practice 2×21 — “What You Do For Love”: I thought this ep was ok, at least compared to the rest of the season. Things definitely did pick up at the end here. As soon as they showed the mom-to-be’s brother-in-law there with her instead of her husband, I knew he was in love with her. Then when it was revealed that she needed a heart, I figured he would do something. I thought he was going to commit suicide so she could have the heart… I was totally wrong about him poisoning his own brother! That’s cold!
The Hangover was tops at the box office for the second consecutive week. (I know my last Top Movies post had it at No.2, but it was written prior to a last-minute adjustment in the figures that pushed The Hangover past Up by $200k.) Anyway, the Bradley Cooper/Ed Helms/Zach Galifianakis comedy added $33.4 million to its take and has already broken the $100 million mark after just 10 days in wide release. Very impressive!
Plot summary (with possible spoilers): Doug (played by Justin Bartha) is going to get married in a few days. So close friends Phil (Bradley Cooper) and Stu (Ed Helms), along with soon-to-be brother-in-law Alan (Zach Galifianakis) do what any self-respecting group of SoCal men would do in the same situation: they take Doug on a road trip to Vegas for his bachelor party.
I have a huge collection of VHS tapes that I need to get rid of. Once I started buying DVDs, I just moved all my tapes into a closet, so now I have several big boxes taking up space in there. I’ve already replaced most of my favorite movies by getting the DVD version, but there are numerous family and vacation videos that I want to keep — and maybe even watch again someday! I could of course take these to a professional and have them make the transfer, but that would no doubt be pretty expensive. So I’m thinking about purchasing this
Plot summary (with spoilers): Angela (played by Heather Graham) and Curtis (Jerry O’Connell) are a recently married power couple trying to focus on their careers. Angela works for an advertising agency and is assigned to a major project by her hard-ass boss Mary (Lara Flynn Boyle). If Angela screws it up, she’ll be gone. Meanwhile, Curtis, a divorce attorney, tries to keep the firm going while partner and friend Danny (John Corbett) drinks himself into oblivion because of marital problems.
