Zombieland, a comedic take on traditional zombie movies, earned $25 million over the weekend to earn the title of box office champion. Starring Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone, and Abigail Breslin, the film benefited from very positive reviews and strong word-of-mouth en route to knocking Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs into second place. Cloudy, which had been No. 1 for two consecutive weeks, earned $16.7 million over the weekend.
The 3-D re-release of Disney/Pixar’s original Toy Story, which first came out in 1995, earned a respectable $12.5 million, putting the film in third place for the weekend. The Ricky Gervais-Jennifer Garner comedy The Invention of Lying sold a somewhat disappointing $7.35 million worth of tickets, while Drew Barrymore’s directorial debut Whip It generated a mere $4.85 million in revenues.
