HIMYM 5×03 — “Robin 101″: I thought this ep was a step in the right direction after last week’s mistake. At least the characters were acting a lot more like themselves this time around. Yes, it was a bit weird that Ted was giving Barney lessons on how to be a good boyfriend to Robin (especially when going over the “hidden erogenous zones” — eww!), but after getting past the initial awkwardness, there were definitely some funny moments. Plus, Ted is really great as a professor because it suits his pompous personality so perfectly. I love how the writers are working these lectures into the plotline.
– Some of Ted’s information was hilarious, especially the parts about how to distract Robin when she’s mad (Canucks ’04 division title, proper gun cleaning and maintenance, and Emperor penguins). The first two I could have guessed. But Emperor penguins? Seriously?? Ha!
– At least Barney seems like he’s really into the relationship. This is much better than making it seem like he doesn’t care, which is what last week’s fiasco was all about. I just have a feeling that it’s not going to be smooth sailing for these two and that they’ll break up at least once before getting back together to become the “Aunt Robin” and “Uncle Barney” of future Ted’s stories.
– Marshall’s barrel was one of the dumbest things this show has ever done. That was not the least bit funny, not even for the “Bermuda Triangle” thing. Yes, I guess I could see Marshall getting excited over something so stupid, but it just didn’t make for a very funny subplot.
