HIMYM 5×05 — “Duel Citizenship”: This episode was decent — certainly much better than last week’s. I enjoyed both storylines for once, and thought that Marshall and Lily were finally put to good use instead of simply being distractions. I could certainly understand where Ted was coming from when lamenting about never getting any alone time with Marshall anymore. I have several married friends who are exactly the same way. They never go out except as a couple, and it’s very annoying.
– Robin’s angst about whether she’s really American or Canadian was understandable. Speaking as someone with homes in two countries, I know exactly what it’s like to have these two different cultures tugging at you. Robin can’t just stop being a Canadian, as it’s part of who she is. But at the same time, she’s not as connected to Canada as she once was, as evidenced by the Tim Horton’s scene. That happens.
– Why didn’t Robin consider dual citizenship right from the start? That’s the obvious answer, of course.
– Marshall is such a wuss. He should not have gotten mad at Ted just because Ted wanted the road trip to be just the two of them. It was Marshall’s fault for inviting Lily in the first place, and Lily’s fault for not realizing that Marshall occasionally needs “guy time” with just his friends.
– I loved all of Barney’s one-liners about Canada, especially when he said, “You can now go back to being pointless!” Ha!
– I also loved when Marshall and Ted were listening to the Sparky book and realized that the exact same thing applied to their relationship. And then they both apologized at the same time, which was cool.
