I wasn’t around yesterday when this story broke, but the news of Meredith Baxter coming out to Matt Lauer on the Today Show is still burning up the search engines. Baxter, of course, played wholesome mom Elyse Keaton on the hit ’80s TV show Family Ties.
The actress had a string of relationships and conventional marriages with men, and has five grown children today. But during her interview, she acknowledged that something always felt off. She wanted to put the blame on the men, but after having an unexpected relationship with a woman that “felt right”, she realized what the problem had been all along: she needed to be with women.
Baxter has been in a committed relationship with Nancy Locke for four years, and has basically been living an “out” life with Nancy that whole time. But this is the first time Baxter has talked about her sexuality in front of a national audience.
What’s my take on this? I’m glad Meredith Baxter has finally found happiness. Better late than never!
