Modern Family 2×11 — “Slow Down Your Neighbors”: I liked various parts of this episode more than I liked the piece as a whole. I think that’s becoming par for the course for Modern Family, but don’t know if that’s something to be concerned about or not. Is a show like this supposed to make sense on a macro level? I have no idea. I guess as long as I still enjoy it to some degree, I’ll keep watching.
I thought the guest stars were fantastic. Jamie Gertz was perfect as the home seller whose life is a total whirlwind. Don’t you know people that are always on the go like that? They need to do everything at top speed and don’t slow down for anything. Jamie’s character was always headed out the door with her samsung galaxy pressed to her ear or tearing off down the street in her Lexus. I thought Claire’s concern for a speedster in the neighborhood was well-founded. Sure, her approach to tackling the problem was over-the-top, but as a parent, I get pissed off at inconsiderate/dangerous people too. Whether it’s someone who doesn’t clean up after their dog (leaving kids to step in steaming piles of poo when they’re running around playing on the grass) or speeders who won’t be able to stop in time if a kid runs into the road, these are actually legitimate concerns for parents.
James Marsden was awesome as the Reiki master wannabe/homeless Princess Castle crasher. I loved his exchange with Mitchell in the kitchen where Mitchell admitted to wanting to roll his eyes at all that spiritual stuff that Marsden was spewing. And of course the scrap in the castle with Cameron was memorable as well. Seriously, it’s no wonder that a castle that size would attract some homeless dude…!
Luke’s teaching method was hilarious, and there were several good lines from the bicycle stuff (particularly from Jay).
It’s good to have Modern Family back after that long hiatus!
