Breaking Bad 5×04: “Fifty-One”: So the season opened with Walt on the run for his 52nd birthday, and the events from this latest episode take place on his 51st birthday. It’ll be interesting to see how everything goes to hell in a handbasket in a single year for him.
The biggest takeaway I have from this episode is that I’m back to hating Skylar again. I just cannot stand her “woe is me” victim act. Whenever I see her in that near-catatonic state with a blank stare on her face, I feel like hauling off and smacking her. Her slow walk into the pool was all kinds of ridiculous too, and I hope the writers are signaling that she won’t be long for this world. I have no sympathy for her at all, not even where her children are concerned. If she legitimately fears for her family’s safety, then she has options at her disposal, including the FBI and WitSec. The fact that she hasn’t gone to the authorities (or, hello, HANK?!) to hammer out an immunity agreement makes me question her mental capacity even further.
Lydia managed to escape death yet again, which leads me to believe she’ll play a significant role in the meth ring’s downfall. Mike should’ve taken care of her when he had the chance!
And aww, Jesse was the only one who cared enough to get Walt a birthday gift. Too bad Walt has done absolutely nothing to deserve it.
