Modern Family 4×17 — “Best Man”: This episode didn’t have much going for it, and to be honest, I’m getting a little tired of these characters. Not even my favorites (the Dunphys) were funny tonight. Everything just seems worn and old with this show already, and with each passing week I lose a bit more confidence in the writers. At this point, I doubt they’ll ever recapture that magic touch from Season 1. I think it’s time to find a new comedy to watch.
One of the biggest issues I had with this episode was Manny. Back when he was 10, he could get away with inappropriate crushes on older women in the name of the “old soul” bit. Now that he’s a teenager and in JHS, however, his actions aren’t cute anymore. They’re just creepy, ridiculous, and pathetic. How could Manny possibly not realize this on his own? And since Gloria will make excuses for Manny until the day he dies, Jay needs to quit worrying about golf tournaments, put aside his la flor dominicana cigars, and intervene more forcefully.
Didn’t care about Cam and Mitchell’s storyline at all, though I did think the tag between Sal and Lily was good. The Claire/Haley situation had the potential to be good, but got derailed when the writers decided they needed to intersect with Alex. Please do not go and make her “cool” in some way. That would ruin the character and the great Haley/Alex dynamic!
The Phil situation was completely unfunny. It’s fine when the situational misunderstandings are due to his clueless phrasing (think of the Matthew Broderick ep), but this seemed way too serious of a misstep even for him.
