Plot summary (from the studio): Channing Tatum stars as Magic Mike, an entrepreneur with many talents and loads of charm. Mike spends his days pursuing the American Dream, from roofing houses to designing furniture at his Tampa beach condo. But at night he’s just magic. The hot headliner in an all-male revue, Magic Mike has been rocking the stage at Club Xquisite for years with his original style and over-the-top dance moves. Just as another summer opens up to a world of fun, Mike begins falling for his new protege’s captivating sister. Despite the mutual attraction, Mike might miss his chance when his lifestyle gets in the way.
Warning: Spoilers below!
- Matt Bomer was damn nice to look at!
- Cody Horn, the actress that played Brooke, has been widely panned for her performance in this film. I hate to pile on, but geez, count me among those that thought she wasn’t very good.
- Speaking of terrible performances, Channing Tatum was godawful as Mike. He wasn’t charismatic at all, and I didn’t understand why any of the other characters would be interested in him. He was wooden and annoying as hell.
- The Kid was just a straight-up asshole. Why would Mike — or anyone — want to help him out to the extent that he did? This was before the sister even entered the picture, mind you, so that wasn’t part of his initial motivation at all.
It wouldn’t make much sense to expect a real plot from a movie like Magic Mike, so I didn’t. But I did expect the film to be fun, and was completely surprised that it wasn’t (especially given its box office haul). It was kind of a slog for me to get through, which is why I give it just 2 stars out of 5.
